New Workshop Fee Structure

Effective Summer 2023, after 3 years of free workshops we are no longer offering 100% subsidy for all our workshops. We are replacing it with a sliding scale system that we feel balances our desire to continue to remove barriers to sexual violence prevention training with the responsibility to grow a financially sustainable organization and adequately compensate our team.

Our rationale and plans around this are outlined in detail below the breakdown of our new rates and we invite you to take a moment to  learn more about our approach to this decision and our current funding so that you can be informed around the pricing option you select.

We ask that you run through the options and go with the price point under which you share the most applicable attributes.

We also do ‘pay by the seat’ workshops - email us to discuss.

We are grateful to the work of Worts and Cunning  in helping us define our sliding scale pricing.

Why are we replacing universal subsidy with sliding scale fee for surface?

We love that you are curious about this. It means a lot that you would like more information about what is happening for our organization right now.

Demand for Services

Demand for Good Night Out workshops has sharply increased over the last 2 years. We recognize this is largely in part due to survivors within the hospitality, live music, and related sectors speaking up.  We are grateful to the community for the ongoing interest and trust in our work.  From June 2022- June 2023 we completed:

  • Apx 75 3 hour workshops

  • Apx 15 2 hour workshops

  • Apx 18 1 hour speaking gigs

  • 35 hours of policy review time

There are no signs of this demand stopping.  90% of the above sessions were carried out without any fees.

Financial constraints

It is our hope that transparently outlining our current financial situation will allow you to make informed decisions around which sliding scale fee you chose to pay.

From June 2023 - May 2024, we have one $40,000 grant to run our education program even with the above mentioned increasing demand. With this money, we will need to pay our part-time program director and skilled facilitators, create and distribute the posters and other promotional materials, provide post- workshop policy consultation and complete our program evaluation.

To date, we have opted to try and keep costs down by not bringing on administrative support. In the last year it has become apparent that we can longer operate and meet demand without assistance with scheduling, promotional, and other day to day tasks. We are looking to bring an administrative assistant on to help ensure timely response to inquiries and emails, applications, and bookings, freeing our facilitators up to lead workshops.

In short: this budget covered our costs when demand was lower, but has been stretched thin as of late and leaves us no room to hire help.

Cost and Pricing Structure

The basic cost of our workshop varies depending on preparation needed, length of session, number of educators needed, and number of attendees, as they leave with print materials. We also provide the establishment or organization with promotional materials to hang in their space, access to our digital materials and 1 hour of consultation time. This means the hard cost of executing a workshop is between $200 and $700.

We also know people who work in this space, talking about and teaching others about sexual violence every working day deserve fair compensation and protection from burnout. We can only offer that through being adequately resourced as an organization. By asking them to run all aspects of the program, we are contributing to burn out in a job that already requires emotional labour.

Finally, there is also the age-old question of valuing our area of expertise. Good Night Out as an organization and our program director have been recognized on the provincial and national and international level for our work in the area of community safety and preventing sexual violence. We recognize that we are one of the only organizations in North America talking about these issues in a way that is evaluated to be accessible, practical, effective, and relevant to the spaces we are invited into. We believe our education sessions, content, intellectual property, skill set and consultation time is worth paying for. Despite this, we struggle to assess the dollar value of our expertise and the impact we have on teams and organizations (thanks, patriarchy!) and continue to want to be affordable and accessible.

This is all a work in progress and we welcome any and all feedback and suggestions at education@goodnightoutvancouver.com.
